Ride a Vintage Vespa to Discover the Heart of Vietnam

Writer: Steve MuellerSteve Mueller

Riding through Vietnam on a vintage Vespa is one of the most exhilarating experiences I’ve had. It’s not just about the wind in your hair or the open roads; it’s about being part of the everyday rhythm of this beautiful country. You see, "the beauty of being on a motorbike is that you’re amongst the people." That’s what I’ve always loved about our tours—it’s not just about getting from one place to another. It’s about the stops along the way, the hidden alleys, and the chance encounters with locals.

When you’re on a Vespa, you’re not just a spectator; you’re part of the scene. You can pull over at a bustling street market, chat with a vendor selling fresh herbs, or follow the scent of sizzling banh mi to a tiny stall tucked away from the main roads. This is where the real Vietnam reveals itself, far beyond the polished tourist spots.

For me, these rides are about more than just sightseeing; they’re about feeling the pulse of the city and countryside, experiencing the warmth of its people, and truly immersing yourself in the culture. That’s why Vespa Adventures was born—to share that sense of freedom and discovery with others, one ride at a time.

The Beginnings of a Love for Vespas

When I first arrived in Vietnam, I was instantly drawn to the buzzing streets filled with scooters. But it wasn't until I stumbled upon an old, weathered vintage Vespa that my true passion was sparked. There was something timeless about its classic lines and the history it carried. Restoring that first Vespa wasn’t just about fixing up a scooter—it was about bringing a piece of history back to life. This is where my journey with Vespa Adventures began.

Discovering Hidden Corners on Two Wheels

Vietnam is a country best explored on two wheels. Whether it’s zipping through the narrow alleys of Hanoi or winding through the scenic coastal roads of Da Nang, riding a vintage Vespa offers a unique perspective. You’re not just observing from behind a car window; you’re part of the scene. The sound of vendors calling out their wares, the aroma of street food sizzling on the grill, the laughter of children playing on the side streets—all of it is right there with you. It’s an experience that can’t be matched.

Embracing Spontaneity

One of my favorite things about riding a vintage Vespa is the freedom it offers. We’ve had countless moments where we’ve turned down an unmarked road just to see where it leads. More often than not, we discover something truly special—a hidden café, a family-run noodle shop, or a quiet village that isn’t found in any guidebook. This spontaneity is what makes our tours unique, letting our guests experience Vietnam in a way that few others do.

The Vespa as a Bridge Between Cultures

The vintage Vespa isn’t just a mode of transport; it’s a bridge between cultures. Locals are often delighted to see these classic scooters cruising through their neighborhoods, and it opens the door to conversations that wouldn’t happen otherwise. Whether it's stopping to share a cup of tea with a farmer or chatting with a street vendor about their day, being on a Vespa brings you closer to the people.
